A rooftop concert is a performance played on top of a building, free to anyone within earshot and usually a complete surprise to the neighbours.
The model for all of them took place on 30 January 1969, when The Beatles set up on the roof of their Apple offices at 3 Savile Row in London and played for about 42 minutes. Traffic backed up in the street below, a neighbouring businessman complained about the noise, and officers arrived from the police station just down the road; the band finished the song they were playing anyway. They ran through Get Back three times, and it proved to be their last public performance together, closed by John Lennon thanking the listeners and joking about passing the audition. The full footage finally emerged in Peter Jackson’s 2021 documentary The Beatles: Get Back. Ringo Starr later admitted he had rather hoped the police would drag him off his drums.
