A celebrity DJ is someone famous outside club music, an actor, a model, a footballer, who also books DJ sets, often on the strength of the name alone.
Purists roll their eyes, but some of them turn out to be the real thing. The actor Idris Elba, best known for The Wire, had been spinning records since his youth under the name DJ Big Driis, long before the cameras found him. In April 2019 he played a house set at Coachella in Indio, California, with his teenage daughter and her friends in tow, then carried on at an after-party the same night. The golden rule of the genre is easy to spot from the floor: at a celebrity set, more people face the booth than each other. The fair test is the one every DJ faces, which is whether the room would still dance if nobody knew who was playing.
