In fashion, a muse is the person who inspires a designer’s work, wears it beautifully and, ideally, makes it famous. The word comes from the nine Muses of Greek mythology, goddesses of the arts, who were spared the fittings.
The classic case is Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy. In 1953, preparing to film Sabrina, she went to Paris hoping for a gown from Cristóbal Balenciaga, who sent her to his former pupil instead. Givenchy, told that Miss Hepburn was on her way, had been expecting Katharine. The surprise turned into a lifelong friendship and eight films together, including Sabrina, Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Charade. A perfume created for her by Givenchy is even credited in the opening titles of Paris When It Sizzles. Inspiration, friend and walking showcase in one: the role has rarely been filled so completely.
