The Negroni Sbagliato is a variation on the classic Negroni in which sparkling wine takes the place of gin, alongside red vermouth and a bitter liqueur; sbagliato is Italian for mistaken.
It was created at Bar Basso in Milan by the bartender Mirko Stocchetto in the 1970s. The favourite tale says he reached for the wrong bottle during a busy service and the result was too good to throw away. Il Post points out that the mix-up has never been confirmed, so it belongs to the legend file.
Its parent is said to be named after Count Camillo Negroni, who around 1919 asked a Florence café to add gin to his drink, the most cited of several versions. The Sbagliato had its own moment in October 2022, when the actor Emma D’Arcy, promoting House of the Dragon with co-star Olivia Cooke, named it as a favourite drink, with prosecco, in a memorably slow delivery. The clip passed ten million views and sent bartenders worldwide searching for the recipe.
