Salone OFF at the Turin Book Fair, it’s clubbing time

Turin is preparing to host a series of events that will transform the Salone OFF at the Turin Book Fair into a true bastion of Italian musical memory. The event is organized by Suono Libero, and the common thread uniting the events is a belief that club culture—that of DJs, historic venues, and underground movements—deserves the same space for reflection as great literature. All of this, organized by Suono Libero, revolves around books and clubbing.

It begins on Thursday, May 14th at the Maxela venue in Valentino Park, with the presentation of “Kinki. Una notte lunga 40 anni” by Micaela Zanni, published by Damiani. The book traces the history of Bologna’s Kinki, one of the most important clubs Italy has ever produced: not just four walls and a sound system, but a place where generations of people have found love, work, and themselves. Zanni tells the story from the inside, through the voice of the person who built and kept that place afloat. The talk is scheduled for 6:00 pm; From 8 pm, it’s time for records with Teo Lentini, Lello B, and guest Uovo from the Pasta Boys, until midnight. Free admission.

Friday, May 15th, again at Maxela, features DJ Skizo and his “Dj Skizo. Start from scratch. In search of the imperfect sound,” published by Shake. The book recounts over forty years of dedication to hip hop culture, featuring voices like Kaos One, Danno, and DJ Ice One, and a work philosophy that could be summed up in the Japanese mantra ikken hissatsu, “one hit, one life”: every performance must surpass the previous one, every production must be better than the last. The talk is at 6 pm; from 8 pm, Skizo takes to the decks with a live set joined by Maurizietto, Next One, and other guests. Again free admission, again midnight as the horizon.

On Saturday, May 16th, the program moves to the Combo at Corso Regina Margherita 128 for the presentation of “Break Construction. Cronache Sincopate di Basso e Batteria” by Artizhan aka Franky B, published by Magmata. The book is a journey through the history of breakbeat, from hip hop to English rave, through the birth of Jungle, Drum & Bass, and IDM, with figures like Aphex Twin, Goldie, and Squarepusher, up to turntablism as a true instrumental practice. The talk is at 5 pm, featuring Andrea Lai and Pierfrancesco Pacoda; the after-party begins at 8 pm with Artizhan, Franky B, Giorgio Valletta, Ivan Cazzola, and Teo Lentini. Free admission.

On Sunday, May 17th, the program doubles at the Mercato Centrale in Piazza della Repubblica. At 2 pm, the presentation of “Tutte le mani del Maffia” by Gabriele Fantuzzi and Luca Roccatagliati, published by Rizosfera, is scheduled: a collective book celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the Maffia Illicit Music Club in Reggio Emilia, a space that between 1995 and 2009 built an original artistic identity, halfway between a creative hub and a heterodox cultural laboratory, far removed from the stereotypes of both nightclubs and social centers. At 3 pm, Andrea Lai presents “Un pubblico meraviglioso. Dj, centri sociali e club culture (1996-2006),” published by Milieu, with Luca De Gennaro, Damir Ivic, and Matteo Flipper Marketti: the story of the Agatha night at the Brancaleone in Rome, from 1998 to 2006, one of the experiences that most contributed to shaping contemporary club culture in our country. From 4:00 PM until midnight, the Mercato Centrale becomes a dance floor with an after party featuring Samuel, Max Casacci, Boosta from Subsonica, Teo Lentini, Bruno Bolla, Lello B, Gandalf, Andrea Lai, Andrea Benedetti, Max Giannini, Rocca, Lele Sacchi, and Per Funk Live.

So many evenings, so many books, but one certainty: those who aren’t there miss out on something hard to make up for. For reservations for aperitifs, dinner, and after-dinner drinks: alessia@eventrecords.net — +39 338 99191223
