festival fashion

Outfits chosen to survive mud, sun and a long walk to the main stage, ideally while looking effortless in every photograph.

Festival fashion is the wardrobe people put together for outdoor music festivals, where the dress code is officially nothing at all and unofficially rather strict: sturdy boots, short shorts, hats, glitter and whatever the forecast permits.

Its most influential moment happened in the mud at Glastonbury in summer 2005, when Kate Moss was photographed in classic black Hunter wellington boots with a waistcoat, very short shorts and a studded belt. Wellies, until then associated with farms and dog walks, turned into a fashion item, often worn with trilbies and waistcoats. The Scottish bootmaker, then almost 150 years old, still went through a rough patch in 2006, but by 2007, under new owners, it was reporting sales up 85 per cent on the year before. Festival style has since become a shopping category of its own, with whole collections designed for fields that most of the clothes will never actually see.
