Glastonbury

The festival on a Somerset dairy farm that began with one-pound tickets and free milk, and still takes a year off for the cows.

Glastonbury is a huge music and arts festival held on Worthy Farm, a working dairy farm in Somerset, in south-west England.

It began in 1970, when the farmer Michael Eavis and his wife Jean organised a first event for which the ticket cost one pound and came with free milk from the farm. The festival grew into a national institution, and an early Pyramid Stage was built by Eavis himself from telegraph poles. Its oddest rule is agricultural: Glastonbury normally runs four years out of five and skips the fifth, a fallow year that lets the land recover and leaves the fields to the cattle. The last planned one before the pandemic was 2018, while 2020 and 2021 became fallow years nobody had chosen.
